Job Summary:
The Town of Oakland is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to serve as a Code Enforcement Officer. This position is responsible for the inspection, investigation, and enforcement of municipal codes and ordinances, with a focus on property maintenance, zoning compliance, signage regulations, and nuisance abatement. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, customer-service focused, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct field inspections of residential, commercial, and public properties to identify code violations.
- Enforce Town ordinances related to property maintenance, zoning, signage, litter, abandoned vehicles, and nuisance conditions.
- Respond to complaints from citizens and Town officials regarding possible code violations.
- Issue notices of violation, citations, and stop work orders when necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, violations, notices, and follow-up activities.
- Work closely with the Building, Planning, and Police Departments as needed.
- Attend court proceedings and testify regarding code enforcement cases.
- Educate the public on code compliance through direct interaction and outreach.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in code enforcement, zoning, inspections, or a related field preferred.
Certifications:
- ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification preferred, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
- Valid State of Tennessee driver’s license and good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of municipal codes and enforcement procedures.
- Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to read and interpret codes, regulations, maps, and site plans.
- Proficiency with basic computer software, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions based on investigation and analysis.
- Professional demeanor with strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed both in the office and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- May require walking, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
- May involve exposure to potentially irate or confrontational individuals.
